Amid speculations that one of the reasons behind the current spat between Google and Facebook is because Google is building its own social network, a high-ranking Google official denies that the search giant is building a Facebook rival.
At the Monaco Media Forum held earlier this week, Hugo Barra, head of mobile product management for Google, said that they’re “not working on a social network platform that’s just going to be another social network platform.”
Last summer, rumor spread that Google was developing a social network called “Google Me.” This rumor was revived given the current clash developing between Facebook and Google during the past weeks.
Although the statement of Barra does not categorically say they are not developing a traditional Facebook-like social network, it does accommodate the possibility that Google is developing a social network platform, just not one that closely resembles Facebook.
Barra further said in the forum that, “”We do think that social is an ingredient for success for any app going forward, search and advertising being probably the best two examples that I would mention. So that’s how we’re thinking about the problem.”
Barra stressed that they think social more as an ingredient for the success of a mobile platform that Google is developing rather than a platform in itself.
