Google Maps is again in the news—Google is adding a messaging feature so you can send messages to businesses within the app. I should say that at this rate, the app might soon become burdened with too many features. That said, adding a messaging feature within the app that allows you to interact with businesses is a win-win for everyone.
Just last month Google added a follow button that lets you follow businesses within the app. That update has now seen the tech giant adding a messaging feature that allows you to make enquiries from businesses. The new feature will allow you to make orders, book appointments, and do a lot more without exiting Google Maps.
“Sending messages to businesses gives you the opportunity to ask questions without having to make a phone call so that you can order a cake for your mom’s birthday while on the bus or find out if a shoe store has your size without having to wait on hold,” Aditya Tendulkar Product Manager Maps said in a blog post.
The ability to send messages to businesses was first introduced to select countries last year, but will now be widely available to all users globally. Businesses will have to enable messages so that customers can connect or send messages to them. Simply locate the “message” button on Business Profiles on Google Search and Maps.
“Now you’ll see your messages with the businesses you connect with via Business Profiles within the Google Maps app, where you’re already looking for things to do and places to go or shop. You’ll find these messages in the side menu of both Google Maps for Android and iOS.”
For businesses wishing to accept messages from customers, all they need to do is to install the new Google My Business app from the App Store or Google Play to sign up. The new Google My Business app not only enables messages; it also makes it easier for businesses to stay in touch with their customers on the go.
Last month, Google added a feature that has been a part of Facebook for a while, and which could further boost the already popular maps app.
To follow a business on Google Maps, simply tap ‘Follow’ and you will start receiving news, details about offers and events, and many more in the app’s ‘For You’ tab. The idea behind this according to Google, is so businesses can get more awareness via the app.
More than 150 million places, according to Google are already on Google Maps, and users can already have access to the new feature. Android users will be the first to access the new feature when it eventually rolls out in the coming weeks. The ‘For You’ tab is currently only available to users in limited markets at the moment, but more countries will be added in due course.
