Google Launches Drive File Stream For G Suite Customers

Today, Google announced its new desktop app for Google Drive users. It’s called Drive File Stream.

If you’re a G Suite customer, you could access it now. It’s a replacement for the desktop app of Google Drive.

Google stated that it would shut down Google Drive desktop next year, which gives users plenty of time to make the switch.

Earlier, Google detailed its plans for the transition. In July, it said that it would launch one single app — Backup and Sync — to strengthen desktop file sync apps for Google Photos and Google Drive for customers.

“As of today, Drive File Stream will be turned ON for all customers, but we’ll only show download links in the Drive interface if you currently show them for Backup and Sync / Google Drive for Mac/PC. For more information on how to turn Drive File Stream on or off in your domain, check out the Help Center. With this launch, Google Drive for Mac/PC is officially deprecated. It will no longer be supported starting on December 11th, 2017, and it will shut down completely on March 12th, 2018. We encourage you to use Drive File Stream. As an alternative to or in addition to installing Drive File Stream, you can upgrade to the new version of Drive for Mac/PC, called Backup and Sync.” – Google

IT departments of companies would see settings for Drive File Stream to appear in the Admin Console for their G Suite. They can configure and distribute the solution for their own domain.

However, the changes made won’t take effect until September 26. That’s the time when the solution will be generally available.

But the launch of such settings is a sign of the official deprecation of Google Drive for Mac and PC. Starting on December 11, 2017, the old Google Drive desktop app will begin to shut down and complete termination will be on March 12, 2018.

You can install Backup and Sync as an alternative or addition to the Drive File Stream app. However, it doesn’t support the collaborative Team Drives of Google.

Still, you can use it with Drive File Stream to sync your other folders with Drive.

This launch news came when some users experienced instability for Google Drive cloud service. Drive and Google Classroom suffered outages.

The interruptions didn’t affect every user, but the number of people affected is more than enough to make a substantial impact.

During the outage, the Twitter page of Google Drive was silent. If there’s an outage, you could go to Google Drive’s official website to find out its updates.

Although the Twitter page didn’t provide information about the issue, it was a sign that the company was aware of the problem and it was working on it to fix it.

The problem started early in the morning, and it continued throughout the day. Those who were affected couldn’t access their documents, photos and everything else they put in the Drive.

More than 50,000 tweets about Google Drive outage have been made. It was a huge problem for those who rely on Google Drive for their everyday task.
