The tech giant Google is being investigated by the US Department of Labor
Working for a major tech company, like Google, is a pretty big deal so some. But the California-based company is being investigated by the US Department of Labor (DoL) due to the fact that Google is violating federal employment laws, as reported by The Guardian. According to the investigation females employees are getting payed less than their male colleagues.
Janette Wipper, a DoL regional director, testified in a courtroom in San Francisco:
“We found systemic compensation disparities against women pretty much across the entire workforce.”
Also, Janet Herold regional solicitor for the DoL, said:
“The investigation is not complete, but at this point the department has received compelling evidence of very significant discrimination against women in the most common positions at Google headquarters.” “The government’s analysis at this point indicates that discrimination against women in Google is quite extreme, even in this industry.”
On the other hand Google denied any accusation about the gander payment discrimination and the search-giant said that there is not agender pay gap.
But, when the whole thing started? It seems that the accusations were first presented in a federal court as part of a lawsuit against Google in January by the DoL. The Department of Labor was looking to gather documents and salary data from Google.
Due to the fact that Google is a federal contractor, the company has to allow the DoL to inspect and copy records and information about equal opportunity laws.
But, the tech company refused to hand over the required data to the DoL and that was a violation of its contractual obligations with the federal government, according to the DoL’s lawsuit. Google’s spokesperson said about the lawsuit that the company has provided “hundreds of thousands of records” to the government.
Of course this not the first time that a tech company is being sued about gender gap payments. In September the department filed a lawsuit Palantir, a data analytics company. The lawsuit was about the constant discrimination against Asian job applicants in its hiring process. Palantir Said that DoL claims are inaccurate.
Also, in January DoL sued Oracle. In this lawsuit the department claim that the tech company was paying more money to its white male employees than women, black and Asian employees. But, Oracle said that the accusation were “politically motivated” and confirmed that the salaries are based on experience and merit.
As for Google the DoL’s lawyers have requested the court to cancel all of the company’s federal contracts and stop any future contracts with the government if they continue to refuse to hand over the salary data.
