Google Maps has been receiving a lot of new and improved features lately, and they seem to be the reason why the app keeps getting better and better. The only problem with that is that we seem to be running out of count—there are so many features all packed in one app. That said, Maps remains one of the most important apps that millions of people need in their everyday living. In the latest update, Google Maps now has a popular dishes section.
Google Maps can now share popular dishes at your favorite restaurants whenever you pull a listing within the app. The roll out is a global one, and every Android user out there can have access to their most important dishes when they pull a listing. No date has been set for the release of the iOS version of a feature that uses machine learning to match the names of a restaurant’s most talked about dishes. Results come with photos and reviews to share users’ experience about dishes. You can also get information that includes opening hours, and locations among other things.
In the past few weeks, the app has welcomed a couple of changes and additions that make it possible for users to order food well ahead of time with Google. Other popular Google products such as Google Assistant and Google Search have all been added to Maps.
A couple of weeks after Google enabled a messaging feature that allows users to send messages to businesses within the Maps app, the company followed that up when it rolled out another tool. The feature will allow users discover places recommended by other users—Maps has been upgraded to support hashtags in reviews.
The feature was quietly added by Google as there was no announcement to that effect. Users can add up to five hashtags per review, and have them placed at the end of the review so users won’t find it difficult to read.
Google confirmed to TechCrunch that the feature actually rolled out to a global audience a little over a week on Android devices before it was actually discovered by a couple of tech blogs and users. To use the feature, simply tap the blue link when you see one listed in a review. This will take you to a list of other nearby places with the same tag.
A follow button that lets you follow businesses within the app was also added sometime in 2017 to encourage businesses to interact with their customers. To follow a business on Google Maps, simply tap ‘Follow’ and you will start receiving news, details about offers and events, and many more in the app’s ‘For You’ tab. The idea behind this according to Google, is so businesses can get more awareness via the app.
