Are you still using Google Hangouts? If you are, then you only have a year to use it. According to a report, this app will shut down in 2020. However, this report is not surprising considering that the company stopped developing it a year ago.
Last spring, the company stated that it would revamp its Hangouts brand aimed at the enterprise. In that case, Hangouts consumer app’s demise is expected. Google also transitioned its RCS Chat and Android Messages after the misadventures of its Allo.
Every two years, the company introduces a new messaging platform that may compete effectively against iMessage. Unfortunately, none of those messaging platforms managed to beat Apple’s messaging app.
Google stopped Allo’s development because it did not get the response that it was expecting. Google invests heavily in RCS deployment while Android Messages is a runaway success. Thus, it makes sense that Google wants to focus its effort into a single product.
However, many claimed that Allo is not dead yet. Rather, Google just paused investing in it to work on Chat/RCS. Google is still planning to support it in the future.
It is a sad story for both Allo and Hangouts. For many years, Google could not develop a platform that could compete successfully with Apple. Because of how Google treats its messaging platform, many users are staying away from Hangouts and other messaging platforms that Google has made.
To this day, Hangouts remain a popular chat option for Gmail. However, many users are complaining that it is showing signs of aging. They noted several bugs and a lot of performance issues.
As a brand, Hangouts will still live on Hangouts Chat and Meet. Chat is a team communication app that works the same way as Slack. Meet, on the other hand, is a video meeting platform. Earlier this year, Google Voice calling moved back out to become independent after being integrated into Hangouts.
Despite its future demise, Hangouts is still a popular app among Android developers and other Google enthusiasts. Chat and Meet will still operate. But what will happen to the current Hangouts data of the users? No one knows for now. If you rely on chat histories, you should consider making a backup before it dies.
With the future end of Hangouts, iMessage still has not rival. iMessage is one of the features that users cannot leave their iPhone. Plenty of apps may offer the same experience as iMessage. However, this app is built into macOS and iOS. It also supports SMS and instant messaging. It is so good that a lot of Android smartphone users would want to have an Android version of iMessage on their device.
Google tried several products hoping to become an authentic alternative to iMessage. Unfortunately, none of them is a compelling alternative.
Google has yet to confirm this news. But do not be surprised if you hear an announcement sometime in 2019 that it is ending its Hangouts.
