Google Gboard is a keyboard app built for iPhone. And Google just released it, even though reports about it came out a couple of months ago. According to a previous report, Gboard would be a keyboard app with several built-in search functions.
On Thursday, Google released it and delivered those promises with a few features that you can’t find on your standard iPhone keyboard. That is it allows you to search straight from the app using the standard Google search. You can also use it to search for GIF animations.
The web results are useful. It’s especially true if you’re going to send a link to someone. Tap on the search result and the Gboard will paste the URL into the text bar. Then, there’s the emoji search bar that lets you send a particular emoji without having to go a-swiping.
Another great feature of Gboard is that it allows you to swipe between letters to type, thereby, speeding up word processing. To type, you can slide from key to key. However, the app doesn’t let you create your own shortcuts, though it will suggest words.
Google says that it won’t send anything back to Google. And it can adapt to your typing habit. This means that it can learn how you spell your name or that funny spelling of your pet’s name.
Although it can save your search history, you can clear it from its privacy settings.
Setting up this keyboard app is easy. All you have to do is go to Settings and tap on Keyboard. Then, choose Keyboards and select the Add New Keyboard option. Once Gboard has been installed, you can see it on the list of third-party keyboards on your device. Choose the keyboard that you wish to use.
But why would the company build a keyboard specific for iPhone users?
The reason isn’t clear yet as to why the company developed such an app. However, analysts are saying that Goole wants to incorporate its search engine to the keyboard making it more convenient for people who wish to use Google’s search engine to search something.
Then, it’s another way for the company to interact with its consumers. Although Google is still leading in the search game, the search business is changing because people are using their phones to search, instead of their desktop computers.
Another possible reason is that Google wants to improve its revenue. Mobile ads are cheaper than desktop ads. By taking advantage of mobile search, it may somehow improve its returns. Then, Google acknowledged the fact that mobile searches are increasing. And as more and more people are turning to apps, they use the search engine less often.
With the help of Google Gboard, users can quickly tap on it instead of going to Google’s web version. By building its search function directly into the keyboard, Google could boost its mobile searches.
What’s strange here is that Google opted to release it on iOS first. But of course, Android users will get it sooner or later.
