Samsung is launching Galaxy S8 later this month and it has some amazing features
Samsung is looking for redemption – after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco – and announced the official release of Galaxy S8 and S8+. The next flagship of smartphones will be released on April 21st and Samsung layer out the specs and the features. And from my point of view it looks like a pretty sweet smartphone. So, let’s break it down.
Display and design
One of the most reported rumors about Galaxy S8 was the lack of bezels. Well that was true. The phone has almost no bezels and it measures 5.8 (S8) and 6.2-inches (S8+) with a resolution of 2960 x 1440. The AMOLED “Infinity Displays” have a 18.5:9 aspect ratio and it covers most of the smartphones surface. Of course there is no space left for a home button, so Samsung placed a virtual home button. But, this means that the fingerprint sensor will not be on the front of the phone, but on the back, next to the camera. However it will only read your fingerprint and you won’t have to press it. Also S8 and S8+ are water and dust-resistant.
Specs and Battery
Inside the phone you will find 4 gigabytes of RAM and and 64GB of storage, but you can add a SD card for more space. As for the battery you will get a 3,000mAh, non-removable battery, which supports fast and wireless charging support. Let’s hope that this battery will explode (fingers crossed).
Some might be disappointed about the camera on the Galaxy S8. It seems that Samsung didn’t upgrade the camera and this means that you will find a 12-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture and Dual Pixel autofocus system on the back and an 8-megapixel camera in the front. In other words you will get the same camera as Galaxy S7, which is great, but Samsung could at least considered the dual lens option.
We have already mentioned Bixby, Samsung’s AI assistant. And Bixby is not like the “other” AI assistants. Bixby will be able to support every task of the application with use of the conventional interface. Also when you are using a Bixby-enabled app you can easily call the AI assistant and it will understand the current context and state of the application. And it will be smart enough to understand commands with incomplete information and execute the commanded task to the best of its knowledge.
Release and pricing
Galaxy S8 and S8+ will be released in the US April 21 and April 28 internationally. You can pre-order the phone but Samsung didn’t confirm a price. Reports say that the starting price will be around $720 for S8 and $840 for S8+.
