Fitbit is opening its own app store soon. After winning its patent dispute against Jawbone, the company is now launching its own wearable app store. As to when, the company said that it’s going to be “as soon as possible,” according to James Park, the co-founder, and CEO of Fitbit.
The company’s recent acquisition of Pebble came in handy in this new endeavor. Park stated that the new app store would somehow rely on its newly bought assets. Since Pebble already knew how to build an app store, it will help Fitbit in its own attempt to create its own app store.
Why Build An App Store?
This new project of Fitbit allows the company to build a better relationship with employers and healthcare providers through the use of fitness wearable for wellness programs. This week, Fitbit announced its partnership with the UnitedHealtcare and Qualcomm about financial incentives to those who wear Fitbit Charge 2.
“There are so many different applications [our partners] want to write, from fitness-related ones to pill reminder applications. And we don’t have the support in place for that right now, or any software infrastructure on our devices to run those apps.” – Park
As part of Fitbit’s “Works with Fitbit program,” it partnered with Habit, VirZoom, and Peloton. They are nutrition-focused companies. With this partnership, Fitbit is hoping that it’ll be easier for users to achieve their health and wellness goals with the assistance of Fitbit wearable.
To work with several developers, the company provides an open app programming interface. It enables these developers to become flexible in the use of the platform. Currently, thousands of companies are supporting Fitbit’s program across gaming, nutrition, exercise equipment, and wellness. With this program, you can track and measure your health fitness stats in one spot.
When you combine your Fitbit data with Habit, which is a web-based service that can personalize nutrition and make food recommendations to enhance your health, the said service will be more informed about your dietary requirements. Habit will also modify your nutritional plan based on the body fat percentage, weight and calories burned you entered. So, if you wish to lose, say, 10 pounds of weight, but you can’t have adequate daily activity, then Habit will modify your dietary plan so you can finally meet your fitness goals.
On the side of Peloton exercise bike, the integration will be the other way. For every ride, the activity summary will sync with your Fitbit account automatically. Doing it this way will let you see your workout data in one place, making it easier to have a complete look at your overall health and fitness.
If you prefer the VirZOOM VR Bike, the partnership will be the same as Peloton. That is, you can achieve your fitness goals as an F1 driver.
Because of Fitbit’s goal to help you reach your desired health and fitness, you can be sure that more partnerships will come on the way.
“I think part of it is that we are trying to shift the perception of Fitbit from being just a hardware company to a connected device company where software is equally, if not more so, important,” – Park to Yahoo Finance.
