File-sharing Sites Make Drastic Changes to Avoid MegaUpload Fate

The whole cyberlocker ecosystem is experiencing a state of shock as more services take drastic measures to avoid lawsuits by shuttering filesharing and rewards programs.

The domino effect happened hot on the heels of Megaupload shutting down and its heads seized for alleged copyright infringement, money laundering and racketeering.

FileSonic followed shortly and now other file-sharing sites are taking serious actions to avoid suffering the fate of Megaupload.

Fileserve, one of the top cyberlocker services today, followed suit on Filesonic’s decision and limited account holders to download content from their own uploads.

According to TorrentFreak, other sites such as FileJungle, FilePost, UploadStation, VideoBB and VideoZer went as far as closing accounts and deleting uploaded content.

4shared, a leading file-sharing site, informed users that its “Affiliate Program will shut down in one week and since Feb 1, 2012, we terminate your partnership with www.4shared.com.”

Smaller host UploadBox calls it quits, saying, “All files will be deleted on January 30th. Feel free to download the files you store with UploadBox until this date.”

Other websites, such as YouSendIt and MediaFire, are not thinking of making changes because they have more in-depth and law-abiding terms and conditions.
