Eric Clapton may be growing old but his love for cars – as well as his music – lives on as he has gotten Ferrari to make the one-off Ferrari SPC12 EC.

According to Ferrari, Eric Clapton designed the Ferrari SPC12 EC with the Ferrari 512 BB – his favorite Ferrari – in mind and the Ferrari 458 Italia as an inspiration.

The Ferrari 512 BB is part of the Berlinetta Boxer line which was made by Ferrari from 1973 to 1984 during which the famed car company produced 2,323 specimens.

The Berlinetta Boxer’s name is derived from its body (a coupe body) being called by Ferrari as berlinetta and its boxer engine (a horizontally-opposed, boxer twelve cylinder engine).

Eric Clapton has owned three Ferrari 512 BB sports cars over the years, Ferrari said. Meanwhile, the Ferrari 458 Italia contributed its underpinnings as well as some design inspiration to the Eric Clapton Ferrari. By now you should already know what EC is for.

The Ferrari 512 BB

“Designed by the Ferrari Style Centre in collaboration with Pininfarina and Maranello’s own engineers, the SP12 EC was created as homage to Clapton’s career and his long history as a Ferrari owner,” Ferrari said in a feature on the official Ferrari Magazine.

“The result is the SP12 EC. This one-off project’s proportions and architecture have been reworked down to the tiniest detail both in terms of their styling and technology,” the Italian supercar maker explained.

It can be noted that the body of the Ferrari SPC12 EC is like that of the Ferrari 458 Italia although heavily-influenced by the Ferrari 512 BB. The headlights of the Eric Clapton Ferrari are straight as compared to the swooping headlights of the Ferrari 458 Italia. The Ferrari SPC12 EC also gets the Ferrari 512 BB’s signature hood vent and grey lower panels. It also has a less flowing and beefier back.

However, the Ferrari SPC12 EC and the Ferrari 458 Italia are said to have the same 4.5-liter V8 which makes 562 hp and 398 lb-ft powering the 458 Italia to a 3.4-second 0-100kph acceleration.

According to Ferrari, Clapton said that making the Eric Clapton Ferrari is comparable to “being in front of a gigantic blank canvas that had to be painted on.”

However, he said that making the Ferrari SP12 EC was “an incredible experience, one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done.”

According to some reports, Eric Clapton paid about $4.75 million for the Ferrari SP12 EC, although Ferrari did not reveal exactly how much the music icon paid.
