Facebook is intensifying its expansion project at Menlo Park by investing in the community. The company announced plans to expand its project beyond its current stage, and is now working to redevelop the former Menlo Science & Technology Park. Called Willow Campus, the project comprises of an integrated, mixed-use village that will provide much needed services, housing and transit solutions as well as office space, Facebook said.

Part of the long time plan according to the social media giant, will be to create a neighborhood center that will provided community services to inhabitants. The project will occupy a massive 125,000 square feet of new retail space that comprise of a grocery store, pharmacy and additional community-facing retail.

John Tenanes, VP Global Facilities and Real Estate at Facebook said:

“The first official step will be the filing of our plan with Menlo Park in July 2017. We will begin more formal conversations with local government officials and community organizations over the course of the review process, which we expect to last approximately two years. We envision construction will follow in phases, with the first to include the grocery, retail, housing and office completed in early 2021, and subsequent phases will take two years each to complete.”

1,500 unit of houses will be built on the campus that will be completed in 2022. The company said on Friday that 15 percent of the housing project will be offered below market rates.

From providing affordable housing to residents of Menlo Park to creating job opportunities, Facebook’s new gigantic project will improve the lives of thousands of people.

“Our hope is to create a physical space that supports our community and builds on our existing programs. We’ve hosted tens of thousands of community members at farmers’ markets and events, and partnered with nonprofits like Rebuilding Together Peninsula to rehabilitate local homes. We’ve also enrolled local high school students from East Palo Alto, Belle Haven and Redwood City in our six-week summer internship program.”

The Willow Campus project is just one of many more projects the company plans to bring to local communities. Facebook said it plans to work closely with local leaders and community members to its presence is felt in a way that will benefit and impact the lives of everyone.

Facebook is partnering with OMA New York; a company it jointly produced a video that detailed its vision and hope for integrating more closely with the community.

Facebook moved to its present location two years ago. Designed by Frank Gehry, Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park occupies 430,000-square-foot, and is a beauty to build.

A filing with Menlo Park is expected before the end of July, after which formal talks between representative of the social media behemoth will meet with government officials and community organizations over the course of the review process.
