Today, Facebook announced that it’s going to phase out third-party invites. Yes, it’s that one feature that most of us have forgotten. It’s a feature reserved for games, like FarmVille and Bejeweled.
But the majority of its users might have blocked out those app invites from showing up on their Facebook feed. That’s because no one wants to receive constant notifications telling them that their friends need help with crops and other game-related tricks.
However, app invites were an essential part of Facebook. But Facebook might have realized that its users are no longer using it. That’s why it’ll slowly phase out the said feature. It’ll still be available up to February 6, 2018.
“App Invites will no longer be supported starting with Facebook SDK version 4.28 and above. Previous versions of the SDK can still access App Invites, but starting 2/6, App Invites will no longer be supported.” – Facebook
Other features that are going away
The third-party Like buttons are also going away. It would mean that you could no longer Like a page when you’re using another app. In that case, if you wish to like that page, you have to visit the actual page.
The Follow button is also leaving. The social media site will also discontinue comment mirroring. This feature allowed you to comment on content using your Facebook account.
Why these changes?
“We’re continuously evaluating how to best serve our developer community. To support this effort, we recently reviewed our product offerings to ensure our resources are focused on building and enhancing the solutions that create the most value for developers.”
Although there are features that will leave, Facebook adds other functionalities that you might like. For example, the company recently launched Facebook Creator. It’s a new app that encourages famous content creators on YouTube and other websites to use the said tool to “take their passions to the next level.”
Facebook revealed before that it’s going to invest in original programming, video messaging and live streaming. To strengthen its relationship with video creators, it opened an office in Playa Vista last year.
Video is a major player in increasing engagement on Facebook, thereby, improving advertising revenue. Although the Creator’s app is a separate app, the tools are designed to publish videos to Facebook. Thus, it could be used as a video editing program that you could apply it to track and produce video and post it on the main app.
Facebook no longer lets you delete post
Some users reported that they could no longer delete a post using the desktop site. That is, the delete option is no longer available. When you click the menu button, you would only see save a post, turn off notifications and edit post, but there’s no delete option.
It might just be a bug. However, if Facebook is experimenting with removing the said button, then it’s going to be a concerning move because many users would want to delete a post that they think is embarrassing.
So far, the change appeared on the desktop site of Facebook. It’s still working on iOS and Android app.
