For the first time, Instagram adds Augmented Reality (AR) to its platform. Now, expect to see your feed to get a lot more attractive as your friends will turn themselves into something that is out of this world.
The effects will be similar to Pokemon Go, for example. The game allows you to see Pikachu as if they appeared in the real world. The recent announcement will enable Instagram users to overlay some wacky effects on their videos or photos.
With Instagram AR effects, how you post stories will be changed dramatically. Instagram stories are different from the video posts that show up in the timeline. Instead, they appear in a slideshow format. And the photos are only available within 24 hours of posting.
Spark AR Effects
Spark AR enables everyone to design, build and share an augmented reality experience with their friends. There is no coding experience necessary when you build AR for Facebook and Instagram.
Before, the tool was only accessible to approved creators. However, with the announcement today, anyone can create and update AR filters to their Instagram stories.
In May 2018, Instagram launched AR filters. However, their popularity only exploded after several creators participated in the beta test last October.
With the designer filters, AR creators’ followings increased. Keep in mind that effects can only be accessed when the user follows the creators’ account. After following that account, the effects will appear in the Stories camera’s effects.
Today’s update may also include an enormous amount of face filters into the Stories ecosystem. Thus, Instagram adds a Browse Effects option so it will be easier for users to discover and use new AR filters.
What is Spark AR
Spark AR believes that if you can imagine it, then you can bring it to life, no matter what level of expertise you have. With Spark AR Studio, anyone can be a creator. The tool provides you the features that you need to help you start creating.
The tool comes with Patch Editor that allows adding interactivity and creating logic in your effects. You can also add materials and make textures that you can use in the scene.
During the F8 conference this year, the company announced that it was going to move Spark AR out of its closed beta. More than a billion people used AR effects created through the Spark AR platform. The Spark AR Studio software offers support for Windows in April. It is now accessible by anyone.
There are existing filters on Instagram. They are pre-made, of course. But with the new AR functionality, it encourages everyone to be more creative.
The new creations can be shared with friends or followers. The effects gallery feature is handy allowing users to easily browse and apply the effects they want.
Users are now starting to get in the game. We have seen photos of people taking a selfie while it rains fire. Then, some used a Terminator-style Android.
The platform is being used by more than 500 million users around the world. And with AR effects, you can easily express yourself with your own augmented reality effects.
