Snapchat has got a companion in Facebook—a new report just released by research firm eMarketer has revealed that the social networking giant lost 2.8 million users under 25 years in 2017.

eMarketer had in 2017 predicted that Facebook would experience a 3.4 percent decline in 12 to 17-year-old users in the US last year. That prediction was of course, the first time the digital research firm had predicted a decline in usage of any group as regards Facebook.

For the current year [2018], there is even more for Facebook to worry about. The research firm per Recode, estimated that the social networking giant will lose around 2.1 million users in the US below the age of 25.

It [eMarketer] predicted that Facebook will experience a decline in usage among all three groups for users under the age of 25:

  • A 9.3 percent drop for Facebook users under 11-years-old.
  • A 5.8 percent decline in users between 18- and 24-years-old.
  • A 5.6 percent decline in users between 12- and 17-years-old.

There is a glimmer of hope for Facebook when you consider its overall growth in the US. According to eMarketer, the overall US audience will continue to grow for the next couple of years. The report specifically mentioned Instagram; predicting a growth of 13 percent in the current year—105 million users to be precise.

Instagram offers Facebook a lot to smile about especially when you consider its growth rate. The picture sharing app is perhaps, the most successful app among several others owned by the social networking giant.

The Facebook-owned ephemeral app has not only come of age since it became a part of Facebook, it has held its own even in the face of stiff competition from Snapchat. It had since added cool features like livestreaming, Stories, filters, and many more. Not done with keeping its users happy, Instagram had last December added a feature that will enable you follow hashtags instead of popular posts.

Talking about growth, the hashtag feature will help users find new accounts to follow. The Instagram user-base is about to experience a massive rise considering how easy it’s now going to be for new users to connect to other users.

Here’s how to follow a hashtag: search a topic that interests you or tap on a hashtag from any post. You will see different hashtags displayed in your search result along with related accounts. When you do find one that interests you, open the hashtag page and tap on the follow button—and that’s it! You will start seeing top posts from that hashtag in your feed and some of the latest stories in your stories bar—and of course, you can always unfollow a hashtag at any time.

In case you need a helping hand on how to find hashtags to follow, simply check out the hashtags being followed by other people in their profiles.
