The Facebook for Android app has, for the first time, gained more (DAU) direct active monthly users (58.8 million) than the Facebook for iPhone app (57.6 million), according to Appdata. Facebook is the most used app on both the Android and the iPhone smartphones.
The iPhone continues to dominate in terms of the number of (MAU) monthly active users (99.5 m) compared to Android’s 86.1 m, but this stat also speaks favorably of the Facebook Android app because it means more Android users (68.3pc) are coming back on a daily basis to use the app compared to just 57.9 pc for the iPhone.
Facebook develops its apps for iOS and Android, has always supported the iPhone and iPod touch and just recently started supporting the iPad. Facebook supports Android smartphones but not tablets. Android users have often complained of the poor state of the Facebook app because in the past iPhone has been first to get updates, with the Android getting its version much later.
Now with the Facebook for Android become more popular than the Facebook for iPhone, it may get better treatment. The Android got the mobile Timeline update earlier in the week and the iPhone got the same update on Monday.
