Andy Rubin, the man who gave us Android, has a new project and it’s not a new operating system. It’s a phone. The Essential Phone is Rubin’s latest project and the news were first reported by The Verge. But, what makes this phone an ambitious project and why we should keep a close eye at Rubin’s company?

According to Rubin “Simple is always better” and “Devices shouldn’t become outdated every year. They should evolve with you.” But don’t think for a second that this phone is just for calls and texting. Far for it actually. It features an edge-to-edge display will little room for bezels and it has a combination of titanium and ceramic.

The Essential Phone has a 5.71-inch display with curved corners, that looks like the one included in the Galaxy S8 and the LG G6. Inside the phone you will find 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Also it features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor. You will also find a USB Type-C port for charging, but not the classic headphone jack.

As for the cameras there are two 13-megapixel cameras at the back of the phone and at the front you will get an 8-megapixel camera that can also capture 4K video. But this new smartphone is using the dual camera just like Huawei’s P9 and P10. Instead of using second lens for telephoto or bokeh, it’s using it for a monochrome sensor. Also, the front-facing camera is in line with current expectations too: an 8-megapixel sensor that can

All of the above are pretty good, but the Essential Phone has something more to present. They want to introduce an ecosystem of modular accessories that can enhance the phone’s functions. One of them is magnetic connector and wireless data transfer. The Essential Phone has a 360-degree camera that can be clicked on the top of the phone. Another accessory is a charging dock. With the unique Click cordless connector you can quickly recharge your phone and be ready-to-go much easier.

The Essential Phone costs $699 and if you want to include the 360 camera you will pay something extra. It comes in four colors, Black Moon, Stellar Gray, Pure White and Ocean Depths.
