Apple unveiled Apple Store 2.0 or Retail 2.0 on Sunday which underwhelmed many who were waiting for what the iPhone-maker had in store amid all the hype and secrecy surrounding the modification of the consumer electronic giant’s iconic retail stores.
The move was in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Apple’s retail stores. The Cupertino, California-based company opened its first retail stores in McLean, Virginia and Glendale, California on May 19, 2001.
Earlier last week, news that Apple will be overhauling its retail stores for the 10th anniversary was first brought to attention by a report from Boy Genius Report, prompting many to speculate on what Apple had in store for the momentous event.
BGR reported that new hardware has been shipped and were being shipped to Apple stores complete with black curtains to hide what was being done inside the stores for Retail 2.0.
When Apple stores unveiled the change on Sunday, the biggest modification was that stores of the iPod-maker now employed iPads instead of ordinary product description cards.
The iPads which are running on custom software provide an interactive experience for browsing product information and even has a nifty feature of remotely notifying the Apple store management to send a specialist to a product display if customers need assistance.
Other than that, no major redesign in layout and design of the stores were reported.
