Genius, a lyrics website, teamed up with Apple to make Apple Music the official streaming platform for Genius.
The availability started on Thursday. Subscribers of Genius can visit the site using their desktop or mobile to play songs from the song page. Then, on Apple Music, users can read lyrics to thousands of songs.
However, the integration is different from Spotify. The reason for this is that Apple Music will not show trivia related to the track you are playing.
According to the chief strategy officer of Genius, the company is a fan of Apple for a long time. This integration was a result of an ongoing discussion. The two companies had worked together before. This time, Genius wants to work with Apple for a bigger project.
Compared to other similar services, Genius offers the best lyrics database. Its lyrics are mostly accurate.
In a blog post, Genius’s Chief Strategy Officer stated:
“Being able to read lyrics and annotations on Genius while you listen along on Apple Music is a dream Genius experience. We’re proud to make Apple Music our official music player, and we’re doubly excited to bring Genius lyrics to their amazing platform.”
Music Modernization Act
On the other hand, President Trump signed recently the most anticipated Music Modernization Act to make it a law. He signed it during a ceremony at the Oval Office on Thursday. Trump’s supporters in the music community were also present, like Mike Love and Kid Rock.
The intention of this law is to update the music copyright law to ensure that it is compatible with the digital era. This Act aims to ensure songwriters who wrote songs that were recorded before 1972 will receive the royalties they deserve. It also aims to make sure that music producers will also get royalties. Furthermore, it updates the royalty rules for music streaming services. With this Act, music creators can collect the money that they deserve.
When Trump asked Kid Rock if he liked the legislation, Kid Rock replied that he likes it. Kid Rock stated that the music industry is a dirty business. He thinks that there are plenty of things that can be done but it is already a good place to start in protecting producers, songwriters, and engineers. Although Kanye West was also at the Oval Office, he did not show up during the signing ceremony.
The MMA is a milestone that could close some of the loopholes in copyright law. In that way, music creators will get paid appropriately.
Spotify’s general counsel commented that the MMA is a great step to modernize the outdated licensing system to fit the digital world. The MMA will offer benefits to the music community. It will also create better transparency and simpler approach to license music and artists will receive appropriate payment.
This legislation has been in the making for 10 years. With the new system, publishers, artists, and songwriters, as well as record labels and digital services, will surely benefit from it.
