Android tablet makers continued to grow in terms of market share in the third quarter of the year at the expense of Apple and its iPad lineup, International Data Corporation (IDC) says in its latest report.

Furthermore, the research firm ventures that the relatively high price of the iPad Mini, which starts at $329 for the most basic model, will be a problem for Apple during the ongoing holiday quarter.

“After a very strong second quarter, Apple saw growth slow as both consumer and commercial (including education) shipments declined, and rumors of a forthcoming iPad mini began to heat ups,” IDC tablets Research Director Tim Mainelli said in a statement.

“We believe a sizeable percentage of consumers interested in buying an Apple tablet sat out the third quarter in anticipation of an announcement about the new iPad mini. Now that the new mini, and a fourth-generation full-sized iPad, are both shipping we expect Apple to have a very good quarter. However, we believe the mini’s relatively high $329 starting price leaves plenty of room for Android vendors to build upon the success they achieved in the third quarter,” he further explained. According to data from IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, Apple saw a significant 15.1 percentage points decline in its worldwide tablet market share for the Q3 2012.

Its market share for the second quarter of the year stood at 65.5 percent which was trimmed to 50.4 percent during the just-ended quarter.

On the other hand, Android tablet manufacturers saw gains during the third quarter, a trend led by Samsung Electronics, IDC says.

“Samsung took advantage of an opportunity in the second quarter,” said IDC’s Ryan Reith in a statement.

“The company offers a wide range of tablet offerings across multiple screen sizes and colors, and that clearly resonated with more buyers this quarter. Its growth to 18.4% of worldwide market share during the quarter represents the first time a competitor has attained this level of share since the original launch of the iPad,” the IDC Mobile Device Trackers program manager added.

According to IDC, Samsung shipped 5.1 million tablets during the third quarter of the year.

That is an increase of 115 percentage points quarter-over-quarter and an impressive 324 percentage points increase year-over-year. IDC says that Samsung shipped 1.2 million tablets during the year-ago third quarter.

The program manager says that pressure is being put on Apple primarily as new entrants to the tablet market are given the spotlight. Nonetheless, he thinks new entries such as the Microsoft Surface tablet will have concerns primarily also because of pricing.

“Competitors are turning up the pressure on market leader Apple. With the recent introduction of a number of Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets, consumers now have a third viable tablet platform from which to choose. However, price points are critical in tablets, and Microsoft and its partners will have a tough time winning a share of consumer wallet with price points starting at $500,” he explained.

If Apple remains first in terms of tablet market share and Samsung is closing the gap taking second place, the three other vendors who placed in the top 5 are Amazon, Asus and Lenovo, IDC said.
