Android Developers has just released the latest Android platform distribution table that revealed how several new trends will shape up Google’s mobile operating system in the coming months.
Android 2.3.X Gingerbread still held a dominant position among its siblings and, as expected, Ice Cream Sandwich is now on the map but at a quicker pace.
All Android 2.3.x Gingerbread releases once again accounted for more than half of the platform driven by strong sales during the holiday season (Christmas to New Year), with the second release, which includes versions 2.3.3-2.3.7, taking up the bulk of new Android device activations at 54.9 percent.
Android 2.2 Froyo, the one-time leader of several months ago, continued to drop down in the list and fast, its market share plunging by almost 5 percentage points for this month alone.
The superannuated Android 2.1 Eclair managed to grab third place in the roll of most popular Android releases, but its current 8.5 percent market share continues to decrease.
Sales of Android Honeycomb tablets in the week between December 25 and January 1 fueled the platforms 28 percent surge from the mere 2.4 percent it had in November, with the three releases, 3.0-3.2, accumulating a total of 3.3 percent market share on the Android platform distribution table.
The best news of all is that Android 4.0.X Ice Cream Sandwich has finally appeared on the chart and now powers 0.6 percent of all Android devices.
Ice Cream Sandwich has two releases, one covers versions 4.0 to 4.0.2 while the other Android 4.0.3, but both of them were even at 0.3 percent each on the Android platform distribution chart.
Only the Samsung Galaxy Nexus officially runs on Ice Cream Sandwich so this indicates a relatively high market share figure.
As much as Google wanted to drop Android 1.5 Cupcake and Android 1.6 Donut, the completely outdated releases just pig-headedly turned down requests to disappear from the list and both still account for 1.7 percent of all Android devices on the market today.
