AdBlock Plus Defeats Facebook’s Unblockable Ads - The Start of a Cat-and-Mouse Game

Two days ago, Social Barrel reported that Facebook started blocking ad blockers.

But, two days after, AdBlock Plus has already found a way to strip the ads from Facebook.

If you have an AdBlock Plus installed on your computer or mobile device, you can no longer see ads on Facebook, even if the social networking site has a new blocker-proof format.

But you must update your AdBlock Plus to avoid the ads displayed on Facebook’s News Feed and sidebar.

Unfortunately, Facebook said that the ad blocker is also removing the regular posts.

The method used by Adblock Plus is flawed, and Facebook is disappointed.

For the social networking site, the ad blocking method implemented by Adblock Plus and other ad blocking companies tends to punish Facebook users.

The latest attempt to block ads on Facebook don’t just block those ads, but it also obstructs posts from the user’s friends and Pages.

So, we can expect that Facebook will have another update to address the issue.

Despite being imperfect, the new ad blocker will still be bad news for the social networking site. It’s possible that the company has other ways to circumvent ad blockers, and it expected that this type of battle would arise.

However, the effort of Adblock Plus to respond within two days is an indication that Facebook’s new format is weak.

It may want to display ads, but it’s impossible for the social networking site to outsmart the browser extension every two days.

In a blog post, Adblock Plus said:

“Two days ago we broke it to you that Facebook had taken “the dark path,” and decided to start forcing ad-blocking users to see ads on its desktop site. We promised that the open source community would have a solution very soon, and, frankly, they’ve beaten even our own expectations. A new filter was added to the main EasyList about 15 minutes ago. You’ll just need to update your filter lists (see below for how).”

Adblock also admits that the social networking site might re-circumvent.

“This sort of back-and-forth battle between the open source ad-blocking community and circumventers has been going on since ad blocking was invented; so it’s very possible that Facebook will write some code that will render the filter useless — at any time. If that happens, the ad-blocking community will likely find another workaround, then Facebook might circumvent again, etc.”

What Facebook did?

To block the ad blockers, the social networking site removed the code that identified ads.

Then, it made them appear like they were a regular Facebook post.

But that effort didn’t go far enough.

On Tuesday, the social networking site said that it felt comfortable evading the ad blockers because the ads it showed were not annoying. It also gave users an increased control over the types of ads they see.

But we all know that Facebook can’t continue to exist without ads. It’s pretty clear that the company’s primary source of revenue is advertising.

Some people who installed ad blockers are saying that these programs are necessary to help them maintain their privacy because those Facebook ads can track their interests while browsing the web.
